House Extension Chelsea London

Sash House,
Chelsea, 2023

Sash House is a two story house extension in London, Chelsea and refurbishment of a terraced house in a conservation area in the heart of Chelsea.

Our design proposal involved opening up the small living spaces and connecting the house with the garden through the addition of a super-sized sash window.

Light-filled Living Spaces

The living spaces of the existing house were made up of a series of smaller dark rooms. As with a lot of terraced homes, the plan was dominated by the return stairs, which occupied nearly half of the rear facade and restricted any meaningful connection with the rear garden.

Replacing a 1970s timber and glass infill, our design intervention to the rear reconfigures the house into large light-filled living spaces connected across two floors.

Natural Materials

We used natural materials throughout with a simple palette of limestone flooring, European oak joinery and polished plaster for the walls.

Smart Storage

The underside of the new stairs is formed by an undulating wall of timber battens with concealed storage and a secret wc.

Connecting to the Garden

We re-configured the stairs at ground floor level to floor directly down to the lower ground floor and create a new connection with the garden. This, combined with the two-storey glazed infill, helps to create a dynamic connection between the two floors of living space.

Super-sized sash window

A double-height dining space now looks out onto the garden with a balcony connection to the floor above.The super-sized sash window further enhances this seamless connection to the garden, opening fully upwards to create a full-width connection to the garden.
