Peel Street, Notting Hill, 2017

This project involves a complete refurbishment and extension of a small townhouse located in the heart of Notting Hill, London. The house was poorly configured into small, poorly lit rooms and was in need of an innovative redesign to accommodate our Client’s young family.

Our design proposal transforms the spaces of the house through the insertion of new vertical circulation core and bring more light deep into the plan through the creation of new openings in the rear facade.

Living  Around the Courtyard

The primary living spaces are connected through the rear courtyard, which is designed as an additional outdoor living room for the home. The main staircase to the first floor is carefully designed to house a ground floor WC, store shoes, conceal pocket doors and connect the first-floor level with a family bathroom in the return.

Optimised Bedroom Storage

On the upper floors, we added a loft addition creating two bedroom spaces. These bedrooms have carefully detailed fitted joinery to optimise the available storage space while also creating a sense of calm and warmth. The detailing is minimalist with concealed handles and flush finishes. This is paired with natural oak cladding to create a tactile textured space.

New Stairs Insert

The new oak clad staircase works hard to free up the upper floors and allow improved access to the family bathroom in the rear return. The underside of the stairs includes a small wc, concealed shoe storage and hidden pocket doors.

Calm Detailing

In developing the interior design palette of the ground floor space, we paired the detailing of the crittall entrance doors with minimalist oak veneered panelling and concealed warm lighting to help create a sense of a calm oasis within the hustle and bustle of Notting Hill.
